South Carolina’s private-land deer calendar is set by SCDNR game zone, and for hunters in Greenville and across the Upstate Piedmont that usually means Game Zone 2 — with Zone 1 dates applying only north of the Norfolk Southern Railroad line.
How SCDNR divides Greenville County
Per the official SCDNR game-zone map, Game Zone 1 covers All properties north of the main line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad from the Georgia State line to South Carolina Hwy 183 in Westminster, then north of SC Hwy 183 to the Norfolk Southern main line in Greenville, and north of that main line to the Spartanburg County line. That zone Includes portions of Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties.
Game Zone 2 Includes all lands of Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenwood, Lancaster, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Saluda, Spartanburg, Union and York counties and partial areas of Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties — the Piedmont land south of that railroad line. Most Greenville metro private land falls in Zone 2.
Game Zone 2 private-land deer dates (2026–27)
On private land in Game Zone 2, SCDNR structures the season in three method windows:
- Archery Only: Sept. 15-30
- Primitive Weapons: Oct. 1-10
- Gun Hunts: Oct. 11-Jan. 1
Archery and crossbows are allowed during all seasons; Crossbows are considered archery equipment. Private-land deer hunting in Zone 2 does not open August 15.
Youth deer hunt days on private land in Game Zone 2 are September 12, Antlered deer only, limit 1, and January 2, Either-sex, limit 2. Tags are not required on those youth days.
Bag limits for Zone 2 private land
Antlered deer statewide limits apply: Residents – 2 per day, 5 total all seasons and methods combined; Nonresidents – 2 per day, 4 total all seasons and methods combined.
For antlerless deer on private land in Game Zone 2, SCDNR sets an Antlerless Limit: 2 per day, 9 total all seasons and methods combined. Individual antlerless tags are valid in Game Zones 2, 3, and 4 beginning Sept. 15.
Every harvested deer must be tagged at the point of kill prior to being transported. Report the harvest through SC Game Check by midnight on the day of harvest.
Other Upstate private-land rules
Sunday hunting allowed on private lands. In Game Zones 1 and 2 it is unlawful to pursue deer with dogs. Baiting or hunting deer over bait is permitted on private lands statewide.
Public deer hunting near Greenville centers on SCDNR Wildlife Management Areas and national-forest tracts enrolled in the WMA program. A WMA permit is required in addition to a hunting license and big game permit. WMA seasons inside Game Zone 2 can differ from private-land dates and must be checked tract-by-tract. Get your SC hunting license and big game permit early. Game Zone 2 private-land archery opens September 15 — not August 15. Always verify dates and bag limits in the current SCDNR deer seasons on private lands page and the SCDNR game zones map before you hunt.
