Clemson and Georgia Cancel Future Football Series
Clemson and Georgia have canceled four future football games that were scheduled for 2029, 2030, 2032, and 2033. The series was originally arranged through agreements announced in 2018 and 2019.
The canceled series was set to include two games at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium and two at Georgia’s Sanford Stadium. The original schedule called for Clemson to host Georgia for the opening game in 2029 and another contest in 2033. Georgia’s scheduled home games were set for 2030 and 2032 at Sanford Stadium. The first canceled matchup was scheduled for Clemson on September 15, 2029.
A termination agreement, signed on March 12 by Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks and Clemson athletic director Graham Neff, ended the contracts and their related provisions, including payment requirements. The records of this agreement were obtained through an open-records request and later reported publicly. Neither university has announced a separate public explanation for why the contracts were terminated.
The decision to cancel the games comes as both programs adjust their future schedules around expanded conference commitments. The SEC began using a 9-game conference schedule in 2026, while the ACC is moving 16 of its 17 teams to 9 conference games annually beginning in 2027. The ACC’s 2027 model requires each program to play at least 10 Power Four opponents.
Clemson’s published future nonconference schedule includes Notre Dame and South Carolina in several seasons. Georgia has also canceled its home-and-home series with Louisville for 2026 and 2027, North Carolina State for 2033 and 2034, and Florida State for 2027 and 2028. Georgia continues to have major future opponents on its schedule, including Ohio State in 2030 and 2031.
Georgia and Clemson have met 66 times since their first football matchup in 1897. Georgia leads the all-time series against Clemson 44-18-4. The teams last played on August 31, 2024, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where Georgia defeated Clemson 34-3. Before the 2024 matchup, Georgia defeated Clemson 10-3 in the 2021 season opener at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.
