Delayed fall colors could lead to one of the most vibrant seasonal displays in years for the region, according to Clemson University forest ecologist Donald Hagan. Warmer temperatures, partly due to El Niño, have slowed leaf color development across much of the Southeast, delaying the typical early fall transition.
An unusually quiet hurricane season has allowed trees to retain more of their foliage. This creates conditions for a more complete color display if favorable weather continues. Tracking leaf color helps scientists understand how forests respond to changing environmental conditions.
Peak fall color generally arrives first in October at the highest elevations and later in November at lower elevations. Areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Caesars Head, and the Jocassee Gorges are expected to be among the first places where visitors can see peak fall color.
