## Greenville Opens New Fire Station

Greenville city leaders are celebrating the opening of a new fire station. Station 4 has a new home, providing firefighters with enhanced capabilities, updated technology, and additional resources. Fire Chief Brian Horton indicated that the new facility will serve a surrounding community of approximately 8,000 addresses.

The previous station, which had been located along East Stone Avenue for 76 years, was considered a landmark by individuals who grew up in Greenville, according to City Councilman Ken Gibson, who serves District 3. An upgrade was deemed necessary after Hurricane Helene, as the aging infrastructure showed increased vulnerability.

City leaders focused on four priorities during the construction of the new fire station: its location, functionality, durability, and the needs of the personnel who will work there. City Manager Shannon Lavrin reported that the 13,000-square-foot building was completed under budget, with $8.8 million allocated for construction and an additional $1.6 million for planning and design. Mayor Knox White stated that this investment reflects the city’s commitment to essential services such as police, public safety, public works, and fire.

After two and a half years of construction, Chief Horton described the new building as more than just a fire station, calling it a second home and a place where service is prioritized. The future of the old fire station and the land it occupies has not yet been determined by city leaders.
