WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court opens its new term Monday with a climate case that asks whether energy companies can be forced to pay for climate-related damages.

The justices are starting with a dispute tied to Boulder, Colorado, where energy companies are seeking to block lawsuits that aim to hold them liable for climate harms. Billions of dollars could turn on the outcome.

Immigration disputes are also on the new term’s docket, along with other high-profile fights the court is expected to take up in the months ahead.
