Greenville, S.C. — The Upcountry History Museum will open a new semi-permanent exhibition, Max and Trude Heller: A Story of Courage, Community, and Coming Home, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit tells how Austrian refugees Max and Trude Heller fled the Nazi regime during the Second World War, settled in Greenville and spent decades in service to the community.

Visitors will follow the couple from their early lives in Austria through their escapes, their arrival in Greenville and their lives and careers in business, government, education and service. Maps, timelines and other interactive elements appear on two digital screens alongside a curated selection of physical artifacts.

The museum is at 540 Buncombe Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit adds to other tributes on Heritage Green, the downtown arts and cultural campus along College Street. The Trude Heller Children’s Garden at The Children’s Museum honors Trude Heller, a Holocaust educator devoted to teaching children, and opened to the public in October 2025.
