GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville Zoo’s Halloween trick-or-treat event is back for a 40th season, and this year it adds an afternoon on Halloween itself to its usual evening run.

Prisma Health Boo in the Zoo opened Wednesday at the zoo at 150 Cleveland Park Drive. Gates are open nightly between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Oct. 14-18 and again Oct. 21-30. The added Halloween slot on Oct. 31 is a daytime one, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The event began in 1986, and staff plan for roughly 2,000 visitors each night.

Zoo members pay $12 a ticket, while everyone else pays $15. Children who want candy need a $3 trick-or-treat upgrade, and that includes babies up to age 1, who otherwise get in free. Kids must come with an adult and bring their own bags.

Inside, families follow a route with 15 candy stations and themed spots called Dragon Alley, Pumpkinville and Ghost Town, plus a light tunnel. The zoo ordered about 450,000 pieces of candy last year and expects to match or top that. The event is the zoo’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

Parking fills quickly on weekends, so free shuttles leave the Broad Street garage every 10 to 15 minutes on Oct. 16-18, Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 30, starting at 2:45 p.m. Sales are final, and the zoo will only call off a session for severe weather.
