DUNCAN, S.C. — Drivers on Interstate 85 through the Upstate were told to expect a thicker law-enforcement footprint Thursday and Friday after the Duncan Police Department confirmed a multi-agency surge along the corridor.
Duncan officers said the push mixes federal, state and local agencies. News crews on Thursday afternoon counted several patrol vehicles staged on I-85 North near Exit 63 and watched two people placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. Officials had not released the reason for those arrests.
The timing lands on a weekday stretch when that stretch of interstate already carries heavy freight and commuter traffic between Spartanburg County towns and the Greenville metro.
Duncan Police has a separate federal agreement under Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(g) Task Force Model. That memorandum lets nominated, trained and certified Duncan officers perform certain immigration-enforcement functions under ICE direction inside the department’s jurisdiction.
The written pact says those delegated duties run only as spelled out in the agreement and otherwise leave ordinary Duncan Police powers unchanged. ICE and the department name points of contact in an appendix to manage the partnership.
Motorists were advised to slow down, keep credentials ready and expect delays if lanes narrow around the enforcement stops through Friday.
