WICHITA, Kan. — A pickup truck rolled onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon, leaving a man, 35, and a boy, 6, dead and sending 11 other people to hospitals, Wichita police said.

Officers were sent to the complex after a flood of 911 calls at about 3:25 p.m. Central time. When they got there, the truck sat at the field’s west end, and people who had been watching the game were already tending to the injured.

Both people who died were from McPherson, Kansas, and were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the injured include five children between 5 and 9 years old and six adults ranging from 28 to 68. Ten of them had traumatic injuries, from bruising to very severe wounds, though police said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The driver, a Garden City, Kansas, woman police identified only by her age, 34, stayed with the vehicle and was taken into custody. Police said she has cooperated, that two juveniles were riding in the truck, and that one of her children was playing at the complex that day but not on that field. Investigators have not said whether the crash was intentional, and no charges had been announced.

Police Chief Joe Sullivan said detectives know what happened but are still working to learn why. Officers had talked with more than 30 witnesses, and the department is asking anyone with photos or video to share them. Sullivan also praised bystanders who gave first aid before rescuers arrived.

Mayor Lily Wu called it a heartbreaking day for the city, and Gov. Laura Kelly offered condolences to the families and said she had been in touch with Wu. The city canceled all events at the complex until further notice.
