GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — A man was flown from the mountains of northern Greenville County with serious injuries Monday after a fall of 40 to 50 feet from the top of Wildcat Falls, county emergency officials said.
Rescuers were called to the woods around the waterfall at about 2:15 p.m. Crews on the ground had to use ropes to bring the man out, and he was in the air on a medical flight shortly before 5 p.m. Greenville County Emergency Management worked the rescue alongside the River Falls Fire Department. His name and condition beyond serious injuries were not released.
Wildcat Falls sits at Wildcat Wayside, a roadside stop on Highway 11 run by the South Carolina Park Service, between Caesars Head and Jones Gap state parks. Visitors leave their cars in a big paved pull-off and climb a steep staircase next to a smaller cascade. From there a short, mostly easy path winds under pines and hemlocks to the bottom of a waterslide that drops about 130 feet.
State park managers have shut the route to the upper falls, citing a long list of earlier accidents there. The upper falls can still be seen from below without scrambling over the boulders, which the park service warns are dangerous.
