GREENVILLE, S.C. — World Acceptance Corp., the consumer lender headquartered in Greenville, posted a profit of $8.8 million for its fiscal second quarter, the company reported Friday, turning around a loss from the same stretch a year ago.

That works out to $1.92 a share. In the matching quarter of the prior year the company lost $1.7 million, or 33 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter that ended Sept. 30 climbed 3.2 percent to $139.2 million.

Fewer customers are falling behind. The share of loans 61 days or more past due slipped to 5.4 percent from 5.8 percent a year earlier. Total loans on the books held about flat at $1.319 billion.

The lender ran 1,009 branches at the end of the quarter. It also bought back about $25 million of its own stock, roughly 3 percent of shares outstanding. The company said it had tightened its rules for lending to new customers last fiscal year, which shrank its customer base, and has since loosened them again.

World Acceptance is one of the larger companies based in Greenville, where it ranks among the area’s major employers.
