GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville High School is challenging a decision by the South Carolina High School League that took away its lopsided football win over Greer, a decision that could knock the Red Raiders down the 4A Upper State bracket just before the playoffs start.

The league ordered the Oct. 2 victory forfeited after finding Greenville used an ineligible player. Athletic director Mike Anderson said Monday morning that the school was still waiting to hear when the next round of its appeal will be heard.

Counting the forfeit, the Red Raiders stand 3-1 in the region and 5-4 on the season. The Red Raiders close the regular season Friday night at Gaffney, which is unbeaten at 4-0 in Region 2-4A, while Greer travels to Riverside.

If the ruling holds, even a win at Gaffney might not give Greenville the top seed, and some outcomes Friday would leave the Red Raiders as low as third in the Upper State. That would cost them at least one home playoff game.

League bylaws say an appeal puts a sanction on hold while it is reviewed, with the Executive Committee hearing appeals of the commissioner’s decisions. Under the same rules, a school can lose every game in which an ineligible player suited up.

Anderson said Greenville is still eligible for the postseason, which begins next week.
