GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville County election officials sat down Friday to sort through provisional ballots cast in this week’s election, deciding which of them will be added to the county’s final count.

A provisional ballot is what a voter receives at the polls when a question comes up about whether that person is eligible, so that a paperwork problem does not shut someone out. The hearing is where officials settle those questions one by one.

Among the categories reviewed were fail-safe ballots and curbside ballots, along with other administrative issues raised on Election Day.

Common reasons for a provisional ballot include a voter who moved to a different precinct inside Greenville County, or who moved in from another county after the registration deadline. A voter without a photo ID can also cast one, but that ballot only counts if the voter shows the ID to the county voter registration office before certification.

Under South Carolina practice, county officials begin those rulings on the Friday after Election Day. Statewide certification by the South Carolina State Election Commission should follow on November 12.
