Greenville, S.C. — The Matador will celebrate its grand opening in downtown Greenville’s West End on Monday, May 5, bringing scratch-made Mexican-inspired fare, an extensive selection of tequila and agave spirits, and handcrafted interiors to 722 S. Main Street. The opening falls on Cinco de Mayo, and Matador is celebrating accordingly—with all-day drink specials, live entertainment, and an open invitation for locals to come hungry and stay late.

Greenville marks the latest expansion of The Matador in the Southeast, following successful openings in Charleston, S.C., in 2023, and Charlotte, N.C., in 2024.

For owner Zak Melang, the opening of The Matador in Greenville represents a significant homecoming, building upon the momentum of recent restaurant launches in Charleston and Charlotte. “Having grown up in Winston-Salem, the opportunity to bring our passion for Mexican-inspired cuisine and agave spirits back home to the Carolinas is truly a dream realized,” says Melang.

THE MATADOR EXPERIENCE

Matador’s menu offers a fresh and imaginative take on classic Mexican cuisine, paired with the largest selection of tequila, mezcal, and agave spirits in the Carolinas. The food menu features scratch-made dishes that blend traditional Mexican-inspired flavors with local influences and fresh, seasonal ingredients. Complementing the food menu is an impressive selection of 150+ tequila and agave spirits and a list of unique, flavorful, and handcrafted margaritas and cocktails.

Weekly specials like Top Shelf Tuesday—featuring half-off tequilas and mezcals over $16—and the restaurant’s twice-a-day happy hour with appetizers starting at $6-$7, allow guests to sip and savor something new with each visit.

A SPACE DESIGNED WITH PURPOSE

The Greenville space features a 1,400-square-foot main dining room, with additional seating and a bar on the restaurant’s second floor. The space also boasts a rooftop patio with casual and dining seating, a fire table, outdoor lighting, umbrellas, and custom-made ironwork handrails.

Building upon its established presence in the Carolinas, The Matador in Greenville is designed to be another exceptional space within the region.

Zak Melang and his team fully immerse themselves in the design and build of each location, from the carefully curated interiors and metalwork to the custom-built bar tops. In Greenville, Melang personally built the bar and incorporated a stunning stained-glass centerpiece created by Carolina artist Brad Brown, adding a local touch to the warm, hacienda-inspired space.

“Matador isn’t just another restaurant—it’s personal,” says Melang. “Just like our food, which is made from scratch, nothing here is mass-produced. Every detail reflects our passion for craftsmanship, hospitality, and experience.”

UPSTAIRS, THE WHISKEY HOTEL AWAITS

Exclusive to the Greenville location, guests will find The Whiskey Hotel—a moody, elevated extension of Matador featuring the same food and drink menu, plus a signature Whiskey Hotel Ribeye and an expanded whiskey and bourbon selection. The space is also available for private events, offering custom experiences for groups of up to 120 guests.

“I’ve always believed that a great restaurant is about more than just food. It’s about atmosphere, connection, and making people feel at home,” says Melang. “I can’t wait for Greenville to experience what we’ve built here.”

SEE YOU ON CINCO DE MAYO

To celebrate the grand opening, Matador will host an all-day Cinco de Mayo party on Monday, May 5, complete with all-day drink specials, live entertainment, and a festive atmosphere. Guests can also explore Matador’s tequila-forward cocktail menu and agave spirits list, the full menu of Mexican-inspired cuisine, and happy hour deals available from 4–6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close.

The grand opening celebration is open to the public, and seating will be available downstairs on a first-come, first-served basis. The Matador is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight, with no minors allowed after 9 p.m.
