Greenville, SC – Dr. Peter Allan Steveson, a respected Bible scholar and beloved educator, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 10, 2025, at the age of 90. His impact on the Christian community and education spanned decades, marked by his commitment to both teaching and personal faith.
Born on July 11, 1934, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Dr. Steveson was raised in a military family. His father’s service in the Navy meant frequent relocations during his childhood. Eventually, the family settled in San Diego, California, after World War II, where he met Sue, the woman who would become his lifelong partner. The couple married on September 7, 1956, shortly after which they dedicated their lives to Christian service during a camp retreat in Palomar, California. This rededication marked the beginning of a devoted journey in ministry and education.
Dr. Steveson initially worked for Convair Aeronautics while teaching a Sunday School class and attending Bible classes. A pivotal moment in his life occurred during a business trip to Florida, where he felt a calling toward full-time Christian ministry. In 1959, he moved to Greenville, SC, with Sue, where they both became integral members of the Bob Jones University community. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1960, just after Dr. Steveson was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserves.
In 1966, Dr. Steveson returned to San Diego to serve as principal of the Christian High School. His role there included initiating a successful radio ministry titled “Viewpoint on the Home and Family,” which continued to air for many years, notably on WMUU in Greenville. After a brief tenure at Macon Christian Academy in Georgia in 1973, Dr. Steveson went back to Bob Jones University in 1974, where he assumed the position of Assistant Principal at Bob Jones Academy under Dr. George Youstra.
Dr. Steveson earned a PhD in Bible and taught over twenty Bible classes at Bob Jones University until his retirement in 2003. His scholarly work included the publication of seven commentaries and books on the Bible. One of his notable works, “Christ’s Last Command,” was translated into Korean, expanding its reach and influence. Beyond teaching, Dr. Steveson was known for his enthusiasm for learning, often seen with 3×5 cards filled with scripture as part of his memorization practice. His commitment to scripture was characterized by his recall of much of the New Testament and considerable portions of the Old Testament, showcasing his deep understanding of biblical texts.
Post-retirement, Dr. Steveson and Sue, along with their daughter, traveled extensively, visiting sixty countries by land and sea. He completed multiple readings of the Bible throughout his life, with his last reading finished on October 12, 2024. A dedicated prayer warrior, he prayed daily not only for his family but also for many others in his life.
Dr. Steveson’s contributions to education and faith had a lasting impact on his students and the community. He is remembered as a loving husband, father, loyal friend, and a teacher who dedicated his life to mentoring others in their faith journeys.
Funeral services for Dr. Peter Allan Steveson are scheduled for Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Hampton Park Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. Visitation will occur from 12:00 PM to 1:20 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 PM. He will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.
