Scoot Watson has been appointed as the new head coach of the Greenville High School Red Raiders football team. Transitioning from JL Mann to Sirrine Stadium, Watson, who has a long-standing history in Greenville County high school football, is enthusiastic about returning to familiar territory.

Last season, the Red Raiders faced challenges, finishing with a disappointing 2-9 record. Watson considers the upcoming season a fresh opportunity, emphasizing the importance of starting strong and focusing on winning right away. He is optimistic about the potential for improvement with a squad that is set to welcome back approximately 12 players who have prior starting experience.

Among the returning players are significant offensive contributors such as Hamp Renfrow, Nuke Shell, and Bryson Mosley. Watson has signaled that there will be an open competition for the quarterback position, with contenders including Tripp Bryant and Holden Powell, indicating that the coach is searching for the best fit for the team’s strategy moving forward.

The Red Raiders’ roster also includes Franklin Whitley, a senior defensive lineman recognized as a hidden gem, holding an offer from the University of Georgia. Watson noted that there are numerous talented players within the program who may not have received the recognition they deserved in prior seasons.

The team is scheduled to kick off their season at home against the Dorman Cavaliers on August 22, marking the beginning of a new chapter under Watson’s leadership.

Before joining the Red Raiders, Watson enjoyed a successful coaching stint at J.L. Mann, leading the team to a 10-3 record and the second round of the state playoffs. Over his five years at J.L. Mann, his overall record was 32-24, with notable success in recent seasons contributing to his reputation as a skilled coach. Watson’s coaching journey in Greenville County started in 2002, encompassing roles at several schools, including Greer, Travelers Rest, and St. Joseph’s Catholic. At Greer, he brought home a state championship and later played college football at Newberry.

The coaching position at Greenville High became vacant after Jaybo Shaw stepped down to pursue another opportunity. With Watson now appointed, there are plans already in place for searching for a new head coach for the 2025-2026 season as stated by the athletic director.

As Scoot Watson takes the helm at Greenville High, the community is hopeful that the new leadership will invigorate the Red Raiders and improve their standings in the upcoming season.
