Carolina High School Lockdown Over Gun Threat

Emergency response at Carolina High School during lockdown

News Summary

Carolina High School went on lockdown after a report of a student possibly carrying a gun, with no weapons found after a thorough search.

Greenville, S.C. – Carolina High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a student reported that another student might have a gun on campus. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. and led to a swift response from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, who confirmed that no weapons were found during the search operations conducted within the school.

Deputies made contact with the student accused of having a weapon and conducted a thorough search of Carolina High School. Students were subjected to a weapons detection system called EVOLV throughout the lockdown. According to Principal Jeremy Carrick, the school was put on hold during the incident, which meant no students could enter or exit the building until the situation was resolved.

The student who was the subject of suspicion was identified and searched; however, authorities reported that no weapons were discovered. Dismissal for students was delayed for precautionary reasons, and entry for parents was not permitted during the lockdown. After completing the searches, law enforcement lifted the lockdown, confirming that everything within the school was normal and safe.

The situation had echoes of an incident at nearby Fountain Inn High School, which also went on lockdown shortly thereafter due to a reported weapon on campus. Police later determined that the weapon in question was a BB gun, which posed no real danger to students or staff. The students involved in this incident have been identified, and an investigation is ongoing to understand how the BB gun made its way onto school grounds.

Fountain Inn High School’s principal informed parents that school safety was maintained and reiterated the importance of the “See Something, Say Something” protocol designed for such situations. This guidance encourages students and community members to report any suspicious activity immediately.

In a related incident on the same day, Christian Elizabeth Welborn was arrested after allegedly stabbing her father on Trace Court. This stabbing occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. and resulted in John Paul II Catholic High School, located nearby, going into a modified lockdown as a precautionary measure. Welborn was apprehended around 11:00 a.m. and is currently facing serious charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and breaking and entering to terrorize or injure. She is being held with a bond set at $200,000.

The lockdown incidents at Carolina High School and Fountain Inn High School serve as reminders of the ongoing concerns regarding safety in educational environments. Both schools responded promptly to reports of potential threats, ensuring the safety of students and staff within their facilities.

As these investigations proceed, local authorities continue to encourage vigilance within school communities, emphasizing that awareness and communication are key components in maintaining safety and security in schools.
