Spartanburg County, S.C. — A passenger died Saturday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center days after a two-vehicle crash on US-221 near the Interstate 26 interchange, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and county coroner said.

Troopers said the crash happened about 1:02 p.m. Monday when a 2011 Ford Explorer traveling southbound on US-221 tried to turn onto I-26 and was struck on the right side by another car.

The Explorer driver and passenger and the other driver were taken to a hospital after the Oct. 5 collision, and the passenger later succumbed to injuries on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartanburg County Coroner Office said the passenger was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m. Saturday at the medical center.

Highway Patrol reports described the crash at Hwy 221 at the intersection with I-26 and said both vehicles occupants required hospital care after the impact.

Upstate motorists use the US-221 and I-26 junction as a busy gateway between Laurens County communities and Spartanburg, where weekend traffic still carries crash aftermath investigations.
