Anderson, S.C. – Woman Killed and Nine Injured in Shooting During Juneteenth Celebration

A tragic shooting during a Juneteenth celebration in Anderson, South Carolina, left one woman dead and nine others injured on June 21. The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. on Scarborough Road, near the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, as the festive atmosphere turned chaotic.

The victim, identified as Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb, 35, of Anderson, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Anderson County Coroner has classified her death as a homicide.

In addition to the fatality, the shooting left ten people injured, with two individuals suffering severe gunshot wounds. Seven of the injured were treated for wounds to their extremities at AnMed Hospital after being transported there in private vehicles. Most of the victims were quickly taken to the hospital by individuals who were on-site.

Authorities described the scene as “chaotic,” with many attendees fleeing as gunshots rang out. Witnesses reported that an argument in the parking lot escalated into the shooting, causing panic among the crowd that had gathered peacefully for the Juneteenth event.

Community Reaction and Investigation

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports from bystanders who heard the gunfire. First responders, including deputies, EMS personnel, firefighters, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, quickly arrived on the scene to attend to the injured and secure the area. Evidence was scattered across the site, such as clothing and debris, with investigators collecting shell casings to determine the extent of the gunfire.

No suspects have been publicly identified at this time, though the investigation remains active. Law enforcement officials are currently pursuing leads and have identified persons of interest related to the shooting. The shooting did not appear to involve the VFW post directly, despite its proximity to the event.

Ongoing Concern for Community Safety

The community is left in shock over the violence that disrupted what was intended to be a celebratory occasion. Many witnesses expressed fear regarding the safety of children and families who attended the event, highlighting the necessity for increased safety measures at large gatherings in the future.

As investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact CrimeStoppers anonymously. The investigation remains a priority for local law enforcement, as they aim to piece together the sequence of events that led to this tragic incident.

The Juneteenth celebration had drawn hundreds of participants earlier in the day, who celebrated the historic significance of the holiday. However, what started as a peaceful gathering culminated in one of the community’s most distressing incidents. Efforts will continue to ensure justice is served and to foster a safe environment for future events.
