News Summary

Greenville, South Carolina has been named one of the best places to retire in the U.S. for 2025, highlighted for its affordability and quality of life. With a median home price significantly lower than the national average, coupled with a cost of living that is about 9% below the national average, retirees find Greenville an attractive option. Factors such as state tax benefits, accessible primary care, and scenic surroundings further bolster its reputation. While some areas face flooding risks, the city’s many amenities and recreational opportunities contribute to its appeal for those looking to settle down.

Greenville, South Carolina has been highlighted as one of the best places to retire in the U.S. for 2025, according to a new report from a leading financial publication. The announcement was made on May 9, 2023, and is based on extensive research that evaluated 950 cities across various parameters, concentrating on affordability and overall quality of life.

The median price of single-family homes in the United States has risen significantly to $404,000, marking a 50% increase since 2020. In contrast, Greenville boasts a more accessible median price of $317,000 for single-family homes, making it an attractive option for retirees looking to settle down without breaking the bank. Additionally, the overall cost of living in Greenville is approximately 9% below the national average, further enhancing its appeal.

Forbes conducted its ranking by analyzing numerous factors, including state taxes, the local economy, air quality, serious crime rates, and the availability of primary care doctors. The city of Greenville excels in primary care access, and its agreeable climate complements its status as a relatively walkable and bikeable community. Despite having a serious crime rate that exceeds the national average, the city remains a desirable choice for many. It is noteworthy that South Carolina does not levy a state estate or inheritance tax, providing additional financial relief for retirees. Furthermore, the state does not tax Social Security income and allows for $10,000 per person of other retirement income to remain untaxed, enhancing its appeal.

Greenville is situated in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, offering residents a picturesque environment with recreational opportunities, including the renowned Falls Park—a 32-acre park nestled downtown and providing stunning views of the Reedy River Falls. Testimonies from recent transplants, such as Andy and Doreen Costa, highlight the favorable housing market and overall living experience after moving from California. This sentiment is echoed by Travel + Leisure, which ranked Greenville as the best place to retire in South Carolina the previous year.

While the city enjoys many positive attributes, it is important for potential residents to consider some drawbacks. Parts of Greenville are susceptible to flooding, particularly during heavy rainfall events, although it is situated 200 miles inland and has a moderate risk rating according to FEMA.

Other cities that made the Forbes list include Tucson, Arizona; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One notable point of interest is that Fargo, North Dakota, has appeared on this list for all 15 years, indicating a sustained reputation as a desirable retirement destination.

As retirees seek environments that combine affordability, quality of life, and access to amenities, Greenville stands out in these aspects, reaffirming its position as a top contender for those looking to relocate in the years to come.
