Carolina High School Lockdown Following Firearm Report

Law enforcement presence outside Carolina High School during lockdown

News Summary

Carolina High School was placed on lockdown after a student reported a possible firearm on campus. A swift response confirmed the campus’s safety.

Carolina, South Carolina – Carolina High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a report emerged regarding a student potentially possessing a firearm on campus. The lockdown began around 3 p.m. when a student informed authorities about the situation.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office promptly responded and made contact with the student in question. Following a thorough search conducted by law enforcement, no weapon was found. As a precautionary measure, the school activated the EVOLV Weapons Detection System, which required all students to pass through the system before being dismissed, resulting in delays.

Principal Jeremy Carrick reassured parents in a statement that the situation was secure while restricting access to the school building for parents during the search. Students were not allowed to leave the premises until law enforcement cleared the area.

At approximately 4:12 p.m., law enforcement confirmed that the campus was safe and reported no weapons had been located. Shortly thereafter, at 4:28 p.m., Principal Carrick informed everyone that the lockdown had been lifted and the situation was under control.

This incident follows another concerning event earlier in the week where a 15-year-old student was arrested at a basketball game for possessing a loaded firearm. Officers at the game noticed the smell of marijuana, leading to a search that discovered the weapon. The teenager now faces charges for possession of a firearm on school property and unlawful possession by a minor. The student was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia and is being recommended for expulsion. Investigators are still looking into the motive for bringing the gun to the event. However, Principal Carrick stated that there is no evidence of threats made against the school following this arrest.

In response to these events, Greenville County Schools have enacted additional security measures. This includes the use of the EVOLV Weapons Detection System and an enhanced law enforcement presence at schools for the subsequent school day. The district has previously experienced several incidents involving weapons at schools, though most have involved knives rather than firearms. Reports indicate only two incidents in the past year involved students making direct threats.

In a related report, another student was found with a knife after allegedly making threats toward a peer. However, the knife’s blade length was deemed insufficient to classify it as a weapon under state standards. Greenville County Schools have emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging students and parents to “See Something, Say Something” to maintain a safe school environment.

In addition to the EVOLV system, the district has recently expanded the implementation of a new security protocol, Raptor Alert, which includes silent alarm buttons on staff badges for use during lockdown situations. These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance security and assure the safety of students within school facilities.

As the community reflects on these incidents, school officials remain committed to strengthening preventive strategies and ensuring the safety of all students and staff within the district.
