Happy Cows and Educational Insights at Pelzer Dairy Farm

Students from Ewing Middle School in Gaffney had a unique and educational experience as they visited a dairy farm in Pelzer, South Carolina. The trip was organized by Career Clusters teacher Emily Grigg, who secured a $500 grant from Discover Dairy to facilitate the excursion. The highlight of their visit was the Happy Cow Creamery, the last operational dairy farm in Greenville County.

A Learning Opportunity

Dairy farms play a crucial role in the agriculture industry, and the students had the chance to witness firsthand the daily operations of a working farm. The trip provided valuable insights into the care and management of dairy cows, the milking process, and the production of dairy products. By immersing themselves in a real farming environment, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the hard work and dedication required in the dairy industry.

Hands-On Experience

At Happy Cow Creamery, the students got up close and personal with the cows, learning about their diet, health, and overall well-being. They witnessed the milking process and even had the opportunity to try their hand at milking a cow under the guidance of experienced farm staff. This hands-on experience allowed the students to engage with the subject matter in a meaningful way and gain a practical understanding of dairy farming practices.

From Farm to Table

One of the highlights of the visit was learning about the journey of milk from the cow to the consumer. The students toured the processing facilities at the creamery and saw how milk is pasteurized, packaged, and distributed to stores and markets. They also had the chance to sample fresh dairy products, gaining a firsthand experience of the delicious end result of the farm’s efforts.
