Police presence at a shooting scene in Greenville

News Summary

A deputy-involved shooting at the Greenville Inn & Suites resulted in the death of suspect Sean Michael Scates. Authorities were pursuing him due to an earlier armed robbery. The incident raises concerns about public safety and law enforcement practices in the community, prompting investigations by SLED and internal reviews by the Sheriff’s Office.

Tragic Incident in Greenville: Deputy-Involved Shooting Claims Life

Greenville is in the headlines for a disturbing event that unfolded Thursday night at the Greenville Inn & Suites on South Pleasantburg Drive. Unfortunately, the incident has left the community shaken and raised questions about safety and law enforcement practices in the area.

What Happened?

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office is currently investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that took place while authorities were attempting to locate a suspect in an alarming armed robbery incident earlier that day. The suspect, identified as Sean Michael Scates, age 45, was being pursued by deputies due to his alleged involvement in a robbery at a Shell gas station on Old Easley Bridge Road in Pickens County.

This robbery occurred early in the morning around 9:30 a.m. When the authorities arrived at the scene, they found out that Scates had made a quick escape in a dark Nissan Pathfinder. The vehicle’s description matched that of a car discovered later at the Greenville hotel, leading deputies to believe they had located their target.

A Tense Standoff

As deputies closed in, the situation took a dangerous turn. Upon seeing the officers, Scates exited the vehicle he had been driving while brandishing a firearm. This alarming development led to a deputy-involved shooting, resulting in Scates being shot multiple times.

Although the deputies acted in response to a threatening situation, it’s tragic to report that Scates was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital around 3 p.m. Thankfully, none of the deputies were injured during this chaotic encounter.

Investigation Underway

As is standard protocol in such cases, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been tasked with investigating the shooting. This thorough investigation seeks to understand the details of what transpired during the interactions between Scates and the deputies.

In addition, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is conducting its own internal review of the incident to ensure that all procedures were followed and to assess the actions taken by law enforcement personnel.

Community Impact

This shocking event has understandably caused some disruption in the local area. Traffic on South Pleasantburg Drive was affected as authorities managed the scene, urging drivers to remain cautious and patient. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can escalate and impact the day-to-day lives of residents.

Moving Forward

In an effort to keep the community informed, a Critical Incident Community Briefing video is set to be released on the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office YouTube channel. Expect to see this valuable update on March 9 at 8 a.m. It aims to provide further insight into the incident and facilitate transparency regarding law enforcement procedures.

As this marks the second officer-involved shooting that SLED has been called to investigate in 2025, the community is left asking many questions. How will this impact the safety and security of Greenville residents moving forward? What measures are put in place to prevent similar occurrences?

Final Thoughts

While tragedy has struck, it’s essential for the community to pull together and remain informed. The investigations will take time, but the emphasis on safety and accountability in law enforcement remains a priority. As Greenville processes this unfortunate event, let’s hope for transparency and support for those impacted.
