Greenville

A DUI arrest has been made following a deadly crash on Interstate 385 in Greenville County, South Carolina. Police have charged 32-year-old Joan Esteban Velez with multiple offenses, including felony DUI resulting in death and felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury, along with an open container violation.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, shortly after 11:30 p.m., at exit 37, which leads to Roper Mountain Road. The response from the Greenville Police Department included officers who arrived on the scene to investigate the crash.

According to preliminary findings, Velez was driving a white Audi with two passengers when the vehicle collided with a dump truck, which was driven solely by a 58-year-old man. Both the Audi and the dump truck were traveling southbound during the crash. Upon impact, the Audi struck the dump truck, causing it to overturn and eject its driver.

As a result of the crash, the South Carolina Department of Transportation reported that the southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about seven hours while responders worked at the site of the wreck.

Emergency responders transported all individuals involved to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Tragically, the driver of the dump truck, identified as David Mather Whitehead Sr. from High Point, North Carolina, succumbed to his injuries before 1 a.m. on Monday. The coroner’s office confirmed his identity and noted the time of death.

In addition to Velez, a passenger in the Audi remains hospitalized with critical injuries. Velez was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center on Monday morning following the incident.

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, authorities continued their investigation at the crash site, focusing on accident reconstruction efforts to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event.

Accident Impact

The crash had a significant impact on traffic in the area, causing long delays for drivers using Interstate 385 during the closure. Authorities worked diligently to remove debris and reopen the lanes as quickly as possible after the wreck.

Legal Consequences

Facing multiple felony charges, Velez could face serious legal repercussions if convicted. Felony DUI resulting in death carries severe penalties, potentially including years of imprisonment. The extent of the injuries suffered by his passenger may also play a critical role in the legal proceedings ahead.

Context of DUI Incidents

DUI incidents contribute significantly to traffic fatalities and injuries across the United States, raising awareness about the importance of responsible driving. Authorities continually urge drivers to avoid consuming alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel to prevent such tragic outcomes.

Community Reaction

The incident has shaken the local community, as families and friends of both the deceased and injured individuals seek to come to terms with the repercussions of the crash. Local officials and advocates emphasize the necessity of promoting safe driving practices to ensure the safety of all road users.

Ongoing Investigation

The ongoing investigation by the Greenville Police Department is expected to shed more light on the circumstances of the crash. As authorities gather evidence and conduct interviews, additional information may emerge regarding the collision, which could further inform the community and responsible driving efforts going forward.
