Exile bar in downtown Greenville won’t reopen

Exile, a bar located at the corner of Anderson and Vardry Street in downtown Greenville, has officially closed. The bar initially opened in 2020 and operated for roughly a year and a half before an extended closure.

The bar’s owners announced the bar would not reopen on social media April 24.

“Exile will officially not be reopening,” the post read. “We have tried everything within our power to bring our space back to the public. We have held out as long as we could and truly did believe we would be able to reopen. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out the way we would like it to.”

Exile, located at 9 Anderson St., Suite B, had become a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The bar offered a unique atmosphere, featuring live music, craft cocktails, and a wide selection of beers on tap.

Customers of Exile expressed their disappointment upon hearing the news.

“Exile was my go-to place to unwind on the weekends,” said Mary Johnson, a regular patron. “The friendly staff and great live music were always a highlight of my nights out in downtown Greenville. I’m really going to miss it.”

The closure of Exile is a blow to downtown Greenville, as the bar’s vibrant energy and unique offerings contributed to the city’s growing reputation as a hub for nightlife and entertainment.

While the owners did not provide specific reasons for the closure, the COVID-19 pandemic was likely a significant factor. The bar faced numerous challenges over the past year and a half, including mandated closures and capacity restrictions.

Other downtown Greenville businesses have also struggled to navigate the effects of the pandemic. Some have permanently closed their doors, while others have managed to adapt and survive.

“The past year and a half have been incredibly challenging for the hospitality industry,” said John Davis, president of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. “Many businesses, like Exile, have faced an uphill battle, dealing with forced closures, limited capacity, and a decline in customers. It’s heartbreaking to see another establishment close its doors.”

Downtown Greenville has seen significant growth and development in recent years. The city has become a popular destination for tourists, with its charming Main Street, vibrant arts scene, and top-rated restaurants.

However, the closure of establishments like Exile serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by businesses, particularly those in the hospitality industry.

As the pandemic continues to impact the economy, local governments and organizations are working to provide support to struggling businesses.

The City of Greenville has implemented various measures to help businesses recover, including grants and loan programs. Additionally, organizations like the Greenville Chamber of Commerce offer resources and support to local businesses.

Despite the difficulties faced by Exile, there is hope that the space will be filled by another business in the future.
