News Summary

A BB gun incident at Fountain Inn High School led to a temporary lockdown, involving four students charged after a fight broke out.

Fountain Inn, South Carolina – Four students have been charged in relation to a BB gun incident at Fountain Inn High School, which resulted in a temporary lockdown on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the bus loop area of the school, involving students from a middle school alternative program.

According to reports, a fight erupted between two 13-year-old students, during which one student discharged a BB gun, hitting the other. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. School staff and local law enforcement responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control without further escalation.

The investigation is ongoing, with the Fountain Inn Police Department working closely with school officials and families to ensure student safety. Police Chief Patrick Fortenberry has emphasized the serious nature of any reports involving weapons on school grounds, highlighting the potential dangers these situations present.

In a related incident earlier in the week, a 16-year-old student from Riverside High School was arrested after he allegedly shot an airsoft gun towards cross-country athletes during practice at East Riverside Park. This incident occurred on Tuesday evening, resulting in one student being struck by a pellet but reportedly sustaining no serious injury. Authorities are actively investigating the airsoft gun incident to determine if there were additional suspects involved.

As a part of a broader crackdown on threats of violence in schools, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has arrested five teenagers in connection with various threats directed towards multiple schools, including Blue Ridge, Woodmont, and Greer middle schools, in addition to Riverside High School. Notably, a second student from Blue Ridge Middle School was apprehended for making a threat via a group chat regarding bringing a weapon to school. During the arrest, no weapon was found.

The incidents occur against a backdrop of heightened awareness about school safety following a tragic mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, which resulted in four fatalities. This alarming event has prompted local authorities and school officials to remind parents to closely monitor their children’s social media interactions, as many threats are now originating from these platforms. In South Carolina, the consequences of making threats are taken seriously and can carry significant legal repercussions.

No individual students have been named in connection with the threats or incidents, but authorities have recommended expulsion for all involved students. Greenville County schools are emphasizing the importance of a safe educational environment as they continue to respond to these concerning events.

As the situation develops and the investigations proceed, local officials remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all students within the district, urging vigilance among parents, students, and staff members alike.
