GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman Football Player’s Cause of Death Released

Furman University announced the cause of death for a football player who passed early February. Bryce Stanfield was hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency at a workout in Paladin Stadium. After going on life support, he sadly passed on Feb. 9. He was 21.

Cause of Death Revealed

On Feb. 23, the university said Stanfield’s autopsy revealed his cause of death was pulmonary embolism. School officials mentioned that his cause of death was unrelated to football. Stanfield’s coaches said he had a back strain that limited what he could do before practices started but was something he had been dealing with and was being rehabbed to get ready for the season. They were not aware of any other medical issues.

School Mourns Loss

Furman leaders remembered Stanfield after his sudden passing, highlighting his contributions and character both on and off the field. The university community came together to support each other during this difficult time.

Memorial Fund

In the wake of Stanfield’s passing, a memorial fund was set up by a SC agency to raise money in his honor. The outpouring of support from the community has been heartfelt, showcasing the impact Stanfield had on those around him.
