Greenville Artist Creates Icon for Artisphere’s 20th Anniversary

Amanda Outcalt is creating an icon for a celebration: The commemorative poster representing the 20th anniversary of Artisphere, Greenville’s annual celebration of visual, performing and culinary arts, presented by TD Bank and held each Mother’s Day weekend on Main Street.

A Creative Process

D.C.-based Outcalt, originally from North Carolina, is a painter, printmaker, and metalsmith. She shows her work across the country but this year, she’s bringing a special, high-jumping rabbit to Greenville – one she created through a detailed process that incorporates a variety of techniques.

Outcalt’s images are based on a process called intaglio, also known as copper etching. This old process allows the artist to draw an image on copper, etch it in an acid bath, and reproduce it multiple times. Outcalt, with a background in jewelry and metalsmithing, takes it a step further by incorporating the etchings into her creations in unique ways.

Narrative Element

The animal images in Outcalt’s work serve as a jumping-off point for her creations, which are completed through painting and drawing to add a narrative element. She shares, “A lot of my work is directly reflective of what’s going on in my life, but it has some more universal themes as well.”

Connection to the Community

The poster Outcalt created for Artisphere features a hare, symbolizing the Swamp Rabbit Trail and the local lore, making it particularly fitting for Greenville. She expresses her love for Artisphere and the community, highlighting the high caliber of art buyers at the event who are genuinely interested in art and the artists themselves.

Event Details

Artisphere, taking place from May 10th to 12th, will feature 140 visual artists on Artists’ Row, along with performing arts, the Culinary Arts Café, Kidsphere children’s activities, and more. It is a celebration that brings together art enthusiasts and offers a platform for artists like Outcalt to showcase their talents.
