New artificial turf field at Greenville County Schools

News Summary

Greenville County Schools announces a significant upgrade from natural grass to artificial turf for all 15 high school football stadiums, costing approximately $24 million. This decision aims to reduce maintenance costs and increase field usage for various sports. Supported by the majority of coaches, the project will commence in November 2025, promoting safer and more versatile playing conditions without raising taxes. The transition reflects the growing demand for athletic space amidst rising sports participation in the district.

Greenville County Schools Say Goodbye to Grass: A Turf Transformation Awaits!

In a groundbreaking move for local sports, Greenville County Schools has made the exciting decision to switch all 15 high school football stadiums from traditional grass to shiny, new artificial turf. This big leap was officially confirmed at a vote held on January 15, 2025, and it comes with a price tag of approximately $24,060,010. The district plans to use an additional $60,000 from the unassigned general fund to help make this vision a reality.

Why the Big Change?

This decision isn’t just about keeping up with trends; it’s a well-thought-out strategy aimed at tackling the high maintenance costs associated with natural grass fields. With more teams vying for field time as participation skyrockets, maintaining those grassy areas is becoming increasingly demanding. The current upkeep for these natural fields amounts to around $167,196 annually—a sum that simply can’t continue to climb.

Greenville County’s Superintendent has pointed out that sharing fields among multiple teams can not only drive maintenance costs up but also elevate injury risks for student athletes. In fact, a recent survey uncovered that 73 out of 78 coaches favor the transition to artificial turf, demonstrating widespread support among those directly involved in the athletic programs.

More Usage, More Sports!

One major advantage of opting for artificial turf is the versatility it offers. The director of athletics has mentioned that this change would allow for expanded use of the fields, accommodating more sports throughout the year, such as soccer and lacrosse. With competition for field space at an all-time high, this newfound functionality could significantly benefit student athletes across the district.

What’s Next?

The actual installation of this much-anticipated turf is scheduled to kick off in November 2025, right after the conclusion of the football season. The project is expected to take around 26 months to complete, with Wade Hampton High School and Greenville High School being the first on the list to receive their trendy new surfaces.

Keeping Finances in Check

You might be wondering, “Will this change affect my taxes?” The good news is that there will be no tax increase related to this project. Instead, funding is coming straight from the district’s budget surplus, so it’s a win-win for the community!

The Green Side of Turf

Plus, it’s worth noting that the materials used in artificial turf can be recycled, and there are measures in place to limit any possible environmental impacts during disposal.

A Growing Demand
