New artificial turf field at Greenville County High School

News Summary

Greenville County Schools has approved a $24 million project to replace grass fields with artificial turf at all 15 high school stadiums. This initiative aims to reduce wear and tear from increased sports activities and create better playing conditions for athletes. The project is set to begin in November 2025 and will start with Wade Hampton and Greenville High Schools, promising enhanced facilities for local sports enthusiasts. Additionally, Greenville High has appointed a new football coach, aiming for improved performance in the upcoming season.

Exciting Changes Ahead for Greenville County High Schools

The future looks bright for our local athletes in Greenville! In an exciting move, the board of trustees for Greenville County Schools has approved a whopping 24 million dollars to replace grass fields with artificial turf at all 15 high school stadiums. That’s right, the days of muddy shoes and patchy grass are coming to an end!

Why the Big Switch?

So, what’s behind this major overhaul? The district has realized that there is just too much wear and tear on the grass fields. With a significant increase in games over the past decade—including not just football, but also soccer, lacrosse, and more—the natural grass just can’t keep up. By investing in artificial turf, the schools can host an array of sporting events throughout the year without the worry of damaging the playing surface.

Funds for the project are coming from the district’s unassigned general fund balance, which means there won’t be a tax increase for residents. This is a one-time pot of money that the schools are wisely utilizing to give our students a better playing environment.

When Will the Turf Go Down?

If you’re wondering when the transformation will take place, mark your calendars! Installation is slated to begin in November 2025 after the football season ends. The entire project is expected to take around 26 months to complete, which means our local teams will soon have brand new playing surfaces to show off.

First Up for Turf Transformation

Wade Hampton High School and Greenville High School will be the first recipients of this exciting upgrade. Athletes and fans alike are buzzing with anticipation for what this will mean for their home games and events.

What’s the Cost to Maintain All This Turf?

While the new turf sounds fabulous, it does come with its own maintenance costs, estimated to be around 1.1 million dollars annually. That’s a commitment, but local officials are optimistic that the benefits will outweigh the costs.

New Leadership at Greenville High

10-3 record last year and boasts a wealth of coaching experience within the community since 2002.

This coaching change comes after the previous coach, Jaybo Shaw, stepped down following a challenging 2-9 season. Last year’s Red Raiders faced tough times, grappling with the loss of key players to graduation and transfers. With Watson at the helm, fans are hopeful for a fresh start and stronger performance on the field.

What’s Next?

All these changes—a brand new artificial turf and a new football coach—signal a rejuvenation for our local high school sports enthusiasts. The artificial surfaces are not only a fantastic upgrade for the athletes but also enhance the entire game day experience for supporters and families.

As we move forward, the Greenville community can look forward to an exciting era in high school sports with improved facilities and dynamic leadership. The investment made today will undoubtedly pave the way for many more victorious seasons to come!
