Greenville County Schools is implementing artificial intelligence in classrooms to enhance student learning with new resources and courses.
Greenville, South Carolina – Greenville County Schools (GCS) is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into classrooms during the current academic year. This move aims to enhance student learning through the introduction of new AI resources and testing courses, as disclosed in a recent update presented during the Aug. 19 Committee of the Whole meeting.
GCS is focusing on creating a safe and controlled environment where students can practice with vetted AI resources, according to the associate superintendent for academics. The district believes that AI can go beyond simple content searching to improve classroom instruction and student learning outcomes.
The initiative began with pilot programs at Rudolph Gordon School and Fountain Inn High School in the spring, utilizing a platform called MagicSchool AI. Designed by educators, MagicSchool AI is a generative AI tool aimed at helping teachers create personalized lessons and resources tailored to student needs. All GCS teachers have recently undergone training to effectively use this platform in their classrooms.
During the pilot phase, MagicSchool AI found application primarily within English and language arts courses, serving as a writing analysis and debate prompt tool. Classroom access to the platform is strictly controlled and monitored by teachers, who determine what tools students can use. Unlike more popular AI platforms like ChatGPT, which allow for free searches, MagicSchool AI restricts access based on parameters set by educators.
Starting this academic year, middle and high school teachers at GCS will utilize MagicSchool AI in class. To permit access to these AI tools, students must first complete training focused on digital citizenship and specific training related to the MagicSchool AI platform. The digital citizenship training emphasizes ethical and secure technology use for students.
In addition to integrating AI technologies into classroom instruction, GCS has announced the introduction of a new course titled Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. This course is available to ninth- and tenth-grade students at Riverside and Woodmont High Schools, having been selected by the South Carolina Department of Education.
Students enrolled in this AI course will participate in hands-on learning experiences with advanced technology, aligning with South Carolina’s AI educational standards. The course will explore AI applications across various fields, including entertainment, healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing. Current reports suggest that AI technology will significantly shape job skill requirements by 2030, making this course essential for enhancing career readiness among students.
The Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course is already available to students at Riverside High School this fall, while Woodmont High School is expected to offer it in the spring 2026 semester. Depending on the pilot’s success and interest from students, there is potential for expanding AI courses to additional high schools within the district.
This initiative by Greenville County Schools represents a proactive approach to preparing students for a future where AI will be increasingly relevant in various professional sectors, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in a technology-driven world.
