Alongside these changes, Greenville County Schools have revised their student calendars to include state-required make-up days. These adjustments are necessary due to the disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, which led to power outages and forced the closure of schools for eight days.

According to regulations set by the State Department of Education, districts are mandated to make up three days of missed school resulting from natural disasters. Both the Greenville County Schools board and the State Board of Education have approved the excusal of three of these school closures.

The structure of the make-up days was established by the Calendar Committee, which included input from both parents and school faculty members. The new schedule aligns most make-up days with existing student and teacher holidays or designated teacher professional development days, minimizing the disruption to the academic calendar.

In the future, Greenville County Schools plan to utilize eLearning to mitigate the effects of inclement weather on school schedules. This approach aims to ensure that learning continues, even when physical attendance is not possible.
