Scenic Swamp Rabbit Trail with hikers on Memorial Day

News Summary

Greenville is set to celebrate Memorial Day weekend with a variety of events, including the Palmetto Heroes Hike, designed to honor fallen military personnel and promote mental health. Participants can choose between 6- and 12-mile hikes along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, alongside other activities such as the Great Scot! parade, Scottish Games, and a memorial ceremony. The weekend promises community engagement and patriotism, with local festivities for all ages.

Greenville will host a series of events over Memorial Day weekend, including the fourth annual Palmetto Heroes Hike on Saturday, May 24, 2024. This event is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of fallen military members and first responders while promoting the mental health of current service personnel.

The hike offers participants a choice between a 6-mile or 12-mile trek along the scenic Swamp Rabbit Trail. Beginning at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena located at 650 N. Academy St., the hike will run from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This initiative, organized by Upstate Warrior Solution, aims to raise awareness about the emotional challenges faced by veterans, especially surrounding Memorial Day.

Registration for the hike costs $60, with an additional $30 for those wishing to attend the post-hike party. Proceeds will support various nonprofits that assist first responders and military members. The event welcomes participants of all ages, encouraging community involvement in honoring those who serve.

Weather forecasts for the Memorial Day weekend predict mostly sunny conditions with temperatures in the low 70s, although there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday.

Other Memorial Day weekend events in Greenville begin with the Great Scot! parade, which will inaugurate the Greenville Scottish Games on May 23 at 6 p.m., starting from the Peace Center. The games continue at Furman University on May 24, featuring athletic competitions, music, and family-friendly activities. Admission to the Scottish Games is $20 in advance or $25 at the gate for attendees aged 13 and up, while children aged 5-12 will be charged $10.

The Fair at Heritage Park will also run through May 27, providing carnival rides, food, and an exotic petting zoo—a festive addition to the weekend’s activities.

In honor of Memorial Day, a memorial ceremony will occur on May 26 at 11:30 a.m. at the Veteran Memorial site in Duncan Park, Spartanburg. Additionally, the town of Mauldin will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on the same day, featuring a keynote speech from a retired Air Force fighter pilot.

Local events also include a Take Flight 5K marathon, taking place on May 24 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Runway Park. This marathon benefits the upkeep of the park and includes a commemorative T-shirt for participants. Meanwhile, Jocassee Lake Tours will offer excursions from May 23 to May 26 at Devils Fork State Park, providing opportunities for outdoor enjoyment over the holiday weekend.

On May 27, additional Memorial Day activities will feature various community gatherings, including BBQs, performances, and the Memorial Day Mile run. Keynote speakers at numerous ceremonies throughout the weekend will include distinguished veterans and local leaders, all leading efforts to honor the country’s fallen heroes.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Greenville prepares to engage its community in a series of events dedicated to remembrance, celebration, and support for those who have served and continue to serve in the military and emergency response professions.
