News Summary

Greenville Middle Academy reassures parents amidst social media threats, stating no credible dangers are present as law enforcement investigates.

Greenville – Greenville Middle Academy is currently investigating reports of a potential threat communicated through social media. However, Principal Edgar Henson has stated that there is no evidence of a credible threat to the school, reassuring students and parents alike as law enforcement agencies conduct ongoing investigations related to the situation.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has been actively involved, responding to the online concerns which referenced several schools. They have confirmed that the schools mentioned in the post originated from the Georgia Department of Education and are not related to any institutions in Greenville County. To ensure their students’ safety, Greenville County Schools have also communicated with parents regarding the situation, underscoring the importance of vigilance and the “See Something, Say Something” protocol, which encourages students to report any alarming information to trusted adults.

Despite the lack of credible threats specifically at Greenville Middle Academy, throughout South Carolina, several incidents involving threats to various schools have emerged. Recent reports of threats have surfaced in multiple counties, including Newberry, Anderson, Spartanburg, Greenville, Pickens, Laurens, Oconee, and Abbeville. In Newberry County, a minor made a social media post that mentioned threats of shootings at several schools. However, investigations revealed that the student intended to warn others about threats they had overheard. A bullet was also found in a hallway at Newberry High School, dropped from a boy’s backpack.

In Anderson County, a threat was reported concerning T.L. Hanna, but once again, it was confirmed that no credible threat was present. In a display of precaution, law enforcement increased their presence at T.L. Hanna. Spartanburg County’s District 5 also dealt with rumors of threats that were investigated but ultimately found unverified and not credible.

Closer to home, Greenville County Schools responded to a threat made at Greer High School, concluding no credible danger existed. Additionally, a student from Greer Middle School has been charged for verbally threatening a shooting, resulting in their removal from the school environment. The EVOLV weapons detection system was implemented within Greenville County Schools, but no dangerous items have been found during its operation. In Pickens County, officials addressed two separate threats: one involved a social media post related to Pickens High School originating from another state, while another threat concerning Gettys Middle School was ultimately deemed unsubstantiated.

In Laurens County, a student at Gray Court-Owings School made threats that were discovered to be groundless, while a separate incident involving a 12-year-old student making threats towards Laurens Middle School led to charges. Similarly, Oconee County’s false rumor about a threat at Walhalla High School was confirmed not to be credible. In that county, a 13-year-old faced charges for making verbal threats against Walhalla Middle School and was subsequently placed in juvenile custody.

Abbeville County Schools reported another social media threat, which was also determined to lack credibility. With the recent surge of threats across the state and the country, educational institutions are emphasizing the need for students to communicate any concerns they may encounter. The integration of measures, like increased law enforcement visibility and the use of detection systems, reflects a heightened commitment to student safety in response to such alarming threats.

As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant, emphasizing that awareness and communication are critical elements in maintaining the safety of students and schools.
