Greenville, SC – Local Music Educator Jay-Martin Pinner Passes Away at 71

Jay-Martin Pinner, a beloved music educator and director, passed away on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was 71 years old. His contributions to the music community, particularly at Bob Jones University, have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Pinner was born in Maryland in 1953 and adopted shortly after by Lewis Arthur and Mildred Emma Pinner. He grew up in Fairfax County, Virginia, where he began his classical training on the violin. After graduating from high school, he pursued a degree in music at Bob Jones University, where he earned an undergraduate degree in church music followed by a graduate degree in violin performance.

In 1976, while serving as a graduate assistant in the music division at Bob Jones University, Pinner was tasked with establishing orchestras for junior high and high school students. Armed with a modest budget of $200 and a pack of call slips, he grew these orchestras into a highly regarded program known for its excellence at South Carolina Music Education Association festivals.

Contributions to Music Education

Throughout his career, Pinner demonstrated a profound commitment to music education. He was actively involved in the South Carolina chapter of the American String Teachers Association and served as the head of the BJU string department, as well as the coordinator of the pre-college string/orchestra program for 25 years. His dynamic teaching style and ability to inspire students allowed many young musicians to thrive under his guidance, fostering a love for music that extended beyond the classroom.

Pinner not only directed collegiate orchestras but also taught lecture classes, coached ensembles, and offered private lessons. For the last 17 years of his life, he taught full-time from his private studio, specializing in violin, viola, cello, and bass.

Family and Personal Life

Jay married fellow violinist Dianne Gustafson, forming a partnership that was both personal and professional. Together, they performed and recorded music, often including their sons, Brian and Nathan, in a string quartet. They founded a summer orchestra camp in 1980, which continues to be hosted at Bob Jones University to this day.

In addition to their musical endeavors, Pinner started a small publishing company in 1989 to compose and promote sacred music. This venture allowed him to share his love for music with a broader audience while also supporting the development of others in the field.

Pinner’s faith played a significant role in his life. He made a profession of faith in Christ at the age of nine and later pursued baptism. He and Dianne were active members of Grace Baptist Fellowship in Greenville. On his deathbed, he expressed gratitude for God’s grace and encouraged those around him to live with eternity in view.
