South Carolina Daycare Workers Charged with Child Abuse
Multiple daycare workers across South Carolina have been charged with child abuse, raising concerns about the safety of children in care facilities. Incidents reported in Greenville County, Florence County, Spartanburg, and Anderson reveal a troubling trend as authorities continue their investigations.
Greenville County Incident
Jacqueline Sharika Young, a 31-year-old employee at A Child’s Haven in Greenville County, was arrested for allegedly hitting a child for misbehaving. The incident reportedly occurred on or about April 2, when Young allegedly slapped the child’s face. She has been charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm and was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center on May 2, where she posted a $5,000 bond the same day.
Following the incident, A Child’s Haven reached out to the child’s family and the Department of Social Services (DSS). A thorough investigation was initiated, and A Child’s Haven is cooperating with DSS. The organization emphasized that the safety and well-being of the children in their care are their top priorities, leading to Young’s immediate release from employment. Despite the circumstances, the child’s family chose to keep their child enrolled in the daycare, and the child completed their treatment plan before being discharged.
Florence County Arrests
In a separate incident, four individuals were arrested at Maranantha Christian School in Florence County for charges related to child abuse. Laurin B. Boyce, a 73-year-old daycare worker, is accused of intentionally assaulting a child by slamming their head into a crib and using a blanket to cover their face while pressing down on their head. Additional allegations include knocking a child over on the playground and dropping another from waist height onto their head.
Two other employees, Jessica Anngeline Elmore and Dawn Denise Kirven, face charges for failing to report the abuse after being informed of the incidents. Additionally, Lee B. Patrick, who held a position of trust at the school, also failed to report the allegations. All suspects are currently held at the Florence County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
Spartanburg Charges
In Spartanburg, Karon Corbin, an employee at the First Baptist Church daycare, was terminated following allegations of child abuse. A complaint surfaced on April 16, based on a video that purportedly shows Corbin lifting a three-year-old child by the arm and throwing them to the floor during nap time. Corbin has been charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm, and authorities are actively investigating the case.
Anderson Daycare Incident
A daycare worker in Anderson was fired from Little Angels Child Care after a video surfaced, allegedly showing them handling a child violently. The child’s mother reported bruises on her son, including a fingertip-like bruise on his shoulder. The footage reportedly captures the worker grabbing the child by the shoulder and dragging him to the ground while yelling in his face. As of yet, the worker has not been arrested, and police continue to examine the situation.
Growing Awareness and Response
The rising number of child abuse charges against daycare workers in South Carolina underscores the urgent need for vigilance and accountability within childcare facilities. Each facility involved is taking steps to cooperate with ongoing investigations while prioritizing child safety. As these cases unfold, the public remains watchful for stronger measures to protect vulnerable children under professional care.
