Actors auditioning on stage at the South Carolina New Play Festival

News Summary

The South Carolina New Play Festival is hosting auditions for aspiring actors on May 17 at the Greenville Little Theatre. The festival seeks Equity actors aged 15 and older and encourages diverse backgrounds. Selected actors will receive contracts, and the festival will also feature a scholarship contest for high school musical theater students. Rehearsals and public readings are planned for August. This year’s festival promises to showcase new works and notable guest performances.

Greenville, South Carolina – The South Carolina New Play Festival is set to hold auditions on May 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Greenville Little Theatre, located at 444 College St, Greenville, SC. The auditions will take place specifically in the rehearsal room located upstairs and will follow the Equity Principal Audition (EPA) format, encouraging aspiring actors to showcase their talents.

Actors interested in auditioning are required to prepare a short song and/or monologue, which should not exceed a total duration of two minutes. An accompanist will be available at the venue, and participants must bring a headshot and resume, stapled together, to the audition. The festival is particularly seeking Equity actors of diverse backgrounds—regardless of race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, or body type—who are aged 15 and older.

The South Carolina New Play Festival will provide contracts to selected actors at a minimum rate of $15.60 per hour, adhering to the LORT 2024 rates. This year’s auditions target various roles in new plays and musicals being developed for the festival, which marks its fourth season.

Rehearsals for the selected pieces are slated to take place from August 5 to 10, 2025, with public readings scheduled between August 7 and 10, 2025. It is important to note that an Equity Monitor will not be present during the auditions, and the producer will oversee all audition-related activities. The festival is committed to ensuring a fair and inclusive audition process, reflecting its pledge to equal employment opportunities for all actors.

The festival will announce its full schedule on April 14, 2025, revealing the details of the new works and events planned. Adding prestige to the festival, this iteration will also feature performances from notable guests, including Broadway star Mary Kate Morrissey, known for her role in “Wicked,” and viral sensation Piff the Magic Dragon.

In addition to the auditions, the festival highlights the “South Carolina’s Next Broadway Star Scholarship Contest,” tailored for high school musical theater students. Applications for this contest will open on November 11, 2024, and will close on April 1, 2025. The top three contestants in the contest will be awarded scholarships of $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. Winners will also receive mentorship and guidance from Broadway professionals, participating in live performances during the main festival event.

The South Carolina New Play Festival aims not only to promote local talent but also to provide these performers with exposure to industry leaders. For potential participants who cannot attend the auditions in person, virtual submissions will be accepted by contacting the festival via email.

With a commitment to inclusivity and the promotion of new theatrical works, the South Carolina New Play Festival is poised to deliver an inspiring event for aspiring actors and audiences alike in 2025.
