Greenville, South Carolina

A tragic sequence of multi-vehicle crashes in South Carolina this week has resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries, raising concerns over road safety in the region.

Fatal Crash on Woodruff Road

On Monday night, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on Woodruff Road in Greenville, claiming the life of 31-year-old Wesley Landon Guarino, a resident of Mauldin. The incident took place near Vaughn Road, in proximity to a Pizza Inn, shortly before 10 p.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).

The crash involved three vehicles. As Guarino was driving a Nissan towards Greenville, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Kia Forte that was making a left turn onto Vaughn Road. The impact from the collision caused the Kia Forte to also strike a Kia SUV that was traveling in the same direction as Guarino’s Nissan.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where Guarino was pronounced dead. The drivers of both the Kia Forte and the Kia SUV sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. A forensic examination for Guarino is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. The investigation is currently ongoing, being handled by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office and the SCHP.

Deadly Incident on I-85

In a separate incident, a multi-vehicle crash on I-85 in Spartanburg County on Sunday resulted in three fatalities. This crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. near mile marker 75 when a 2015 Honda Sedan was traveling in the wrong direction on I-85 North. Upon colliding head-on with a 2019 Toyota Sedan, the impact was devastating

Tragically, the driver of the Honda as well as two occupants from the Toyota Sedan lost their lives at the scene. The victims have been identified as Nicholas Sinclair Young, 36, Venustiano Rosendo Dionicio, 49, and Diana Ortega Vargas, 47. The Honda also collided with a 2024 Ford Expedition; however, its driver and five passengers emerged uninjured from the accident.

The northbound lanes of I-85 were initially closed due to the crash but have since reopened. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office and SCHP are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Previous Traffic Incident

Additionally, a separate crash in Butler County, occurring at 12:14 p.m. on January 21, resulted in road closures on the southbound lanes of U.S. Interstate Highway 65. While specific details regarding injuries and fatalities from this incident were not included, it highlights an ongoing issue with traffic safety in the state.

Ongoing Investigations

As authorities continue to investigate these tragic incidents, the community is left questioning the implications for road safety in South Carolina. With the frequency of fatal accidents and serious injuries, there is increasing urgency for improved measures to protect drivers and passengers alike.

Officials encourage drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent future accidents. The Greenville County and Spartanburg County investigations remain active, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
