SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — Greenville County Schools will turn the first shovels of dirt Thursday at 4 p.m. on a replacement Bryson Middle School, a campus in Simpsonville sized for as many as 1,000 students along Fairview Road.
The new school will sit on a 74-acre tract, only a short drive from the existing Bryson building. Plans call for classrooms set up for group work, a greenhouse and new fields for athletics, and district leaders say the land leaves space to grow later.
District planning documents raised the school’s capacity from 750 to 1,000 seats and include room for a future 200-student addition. The existing Bryson property is slated to become the site of a $16.8 million bus center.
Superintendent Burke Royster has said the goal is to stay slightly ahead of enrollment so schools do not lean on portable classrooms, and he has said no tax millage hike is built into the facilities plan.
