GREENVILLE, S.C. — Mayor Knox White and members of City Council gathered Wednesday to formally celebrate the rebuilt playground at Cleveland Park in Greenville, finished after a $3 million renovation.
Greenville city government led the project, and the playground opened to families on October 15. The work brought new play equipment and shelters, along with upgrades to the stretch of the Swamp Rabbit Trail that runs through the park.
That section of trail now measures 16 feet across instead of 12, and it has features meant to slow riders near the play areas.
Designers also borrowed from the nearby Greenville Zoo. Children can hunt for 13 zoo animals hidden around the grounds, read panels about 10 species and climb on animal-shaped equipment built for the youngest visitors.
The park is nearing its 100th anniversary, and White noted that only McPherson Park is older among city parks. The volunteer group Friends of Cleveland Park is marking the milestone with 100 Trees for 100 Years, a centennial push to add 100 new trees across the grounds.
