GREENVILLE, S.C. — Kids are back on the Cleveland Park playground in Greenville. The city cut the ribbon Wednesday on a renovation of roughly $3 million that replaced a play area that had stood for 17 years beside the Greenville Zoo.
The rebuilt site is split by age. Toddlers get low structures, older children get 10 shaded swings and a 27-foot tower with several slides, and teens get a ninja-style obstacle course.
The design leans on the zoo next door. A seek-and-find game hides 13 zoo animals around the grounds, and signs teach about 10 species. Two new picnic shelters were built as well.
Crews also widened the Swamp Rabbit Trail where it runs through the park, from 12 feet to 16 feet, and added features to slow riders near the play areas.
Money came from a $500,000 federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, city hospitality tax revenue and a neighborhood infrastructure bond. Mayor Knox White noted the park, the second oldest in the city after McPherson Park, is nearing its 100th year.
