GREENVILLE, S.C. — Author Scott Gould will be at M. Judson Booksellers in downtown Greenville on Thursday, Oct. 22, to talk about his latest novel, Beneath a Fallen Sky. The conversation runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the shop on South Main Street.
The book is set in May 1910 in Fort Payne, Alabama, where the approach of Halley’s Comet sets off fear that the world is ending. Four people in the mountain town spend what they believe are their last days, and their stories cross over four tense days.
Gould has written six other books. His memoir Things That Crash, Things That Fly won a 2022 memoir prize, and The Hammerhead Chronicles earned the Eric Hoffer Award for fiction. He also holds an S.C. Arts Commission fellowship in prose, makes his home in Sans Souci and has just stepped away from teaching at the state’s Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.
Other Greenville events this week include a Halloween party at Fluor Field on Friday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 9 p.m., with hayrides, a pumpkin patch and trick-or-treating. On Sunday night, Coffee Underground on East Coffee Street hosts an open poetry reading from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
