COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina freshman Amelia Harris has been named the Southeastern Conference women’s golf Freshman of the Week for the second time this fall, the league announced on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Gamecocks, based in Columbia, have now collected three of the weekly freshman awards this season, with Yana Beeli picking up the other earlier in October.
Harris, who is from Australia, tied for 17th at the Landfall Tradition at 6 over par with a three-round total of 222. She saved her best golf for the last day, shooting an even-par 72 on Sunday, Oct. 25, to jump 24 places on the leaderboard. She also tied for the fourth-best scoring average on par 5s in the field at 4.67.
The finish means Harris placed in the top 20 in all four events she played this fall.
South Carolina, ranked seventh coming into the event, tied Wake Forest for second place in the team standings at 13 over par, behind Duke. Eila Galitsky led the Gamecocks with a tie for third at even par, and Vairana Heck tied for fifth. The team ended its fall schedule with three finishes of second or better in four tournaments.
The Gamecocks are off until Jan. 31, when they open the spring season at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, played at Palos Verdes Country Club in California.
