On-the-Water Tips
  • Calm winds make for ideal casting conditions. Fish will be spooky in clear water — use light line and natural presentations.
  • Overcast and light rain conditions are often the best fishing weather. Fish shallow and aggressive — bass are less wary.
  • New and full moons are the best fishing phases. Solunar peak periods fall near sunrise and sunset — be on the water at first light.

Water Body Profiles
7 fishing waters within Greenville — with species, access, tips, and restrictions.
Lake Hartwell
56,000 acres Public lake (US Army Corps of Engineers reservoir)
SC–GA border near Anderson, Clemson, Westminster; ~50 min W of Greenville
Largemouth Bass Spotted Bass Striped Bass Hybrid Bass Black Crappie Walleye Channel Catfish Bluegill

Lake Hartwell is the marquee Upstate reservoir — a 56,000-acre Corps of Engineers lake on the Savannah River chain known nationally for striped-bass and spotted-bass fishing. South Carolina and Georgia hold a reciprocal license agreement, so a general fishing license from either state is honored. Tournament destination for both BASS and FLW circuits.

Numerous public ramps maintained by the Corps of Engineers on both SC and GA sides. Marinas at Big Water, Portman, Hartwell, and Singing Pines. SC freshwater fishing license accepted; full reciprocity with Georgia. Daylight to night fishing permitted; night fishing for stripers in summer is a Hartwell specialty.

Angler Tip
Around-the-clock summer striper bite — find blueback herring schools on points adjacent to deep water with electronics, then run downlines at the thermocline depth (typically 25–45 ft June–September). Dawn and dusk topwater on flats can produce explosive strikes when stripers herd herring to the surface.
Lake Keowee
18,500 acres Public lake (Duke Energy reservoir)
Oconee & Pickens Counties; ~45 min NW of Greenville
Spotted Bass Largemouth Bass Black Crappie Channel Catfish Bluegill Yellow Perch

Lake Keowee is the Duke Energy mountain reservoir between Hartwell and Jocassee — clear, deep, and structure-rich. Spotted bass dominate the gamefish population, with a quality largemouth and crappie fishery rounding out the catalog. Cooler year-round temperatures and ultra-clear water demand lighter line and finesse presentations.

Multiple Duke Energy public access points and ramps at South Cove County Park, High Falls County Park, and Crooked Creek Recreation Area. SC freshwater fishing license required. Boat traffic is heavy in summer — fish early or late.

Angler Tip
Drop-shot a 4-inch finesse worm on rocky points 18–30 feet deep year-round for spotted bass. In late winter, work jerkbaits along clay banks adjacent to deep water for the prespawn bite.
Lake Jocassee
7,565 acres Public lake (Duke Energy mountain reservoir)
Pickens & Oconee Counties; ~1 hr NW of Greenville at Devils Fork State Park
Brown Trout Rainbow Trout Smallmouth Bass Spotted Bass Walleye

Lake Jocassee is the gem of the Upstate — a deep, cold, mountain reservoir held by Duke Energy that supports South Carolina's only year-round trophy trout fishery on still water. Brown trout regularly exceed 10 lbs; smallmouth bass and walleye round out the gamefish. Devils Fork State Park is the primary access. Surrounded by Jim Timmerman / Jocassee Gorges WMA.

Boat ramp and bank access at Devils Fork State Park ($7 day-use fee). SC freshwater fishing license required. Trolling is the dominant technique. No commercial guide access without permit.

Angler Tip
Long-line a Sutton spoon at 30–60 ft over 100+ ft of water for browns and rainbows December through April. In summer, downrigger trolling at the thermocline (40–55 ft) is the only reliable method — trout suspend out over open water.
South Saluda River
Stream — 2-mile public stretch + tributaries Public river (delayed-harvest trout stream)
Greenville County between US-276/SC-11 and South Blythe Shoals Rd; ~30 min N of Greenville
Rainbow Trout Brown Trout Brook Trout

The South Saluda below Table Rock is the closest stocked trout water to downtown Greenville — a roughly 2-mile public-access stretch (downstream of the US-276/SC-11 intersection to South Blythe Shoals Rd crossing) regularly stocked since the 1960s. Delayed-harvest sections are catch-and-release with artificial lures only from November through mid-May, then open to harvest. Tall Pines WMA frontage extends fishable water further upstream.

Pull-offs along Highway 11 west before Wildcat Wayside provide bank entry. Dug Mountain access (handicap-accessible fishing deck and sidewalk) is the easiest. SC freshwater fishing license + trout stamp required. Artificial lures only on delayed-harvest stretches.

Angler Tip
Match the SCDNR stocking calendar — fish two to four days after a documented release. Small spinners (Roostertail #1, Panther Martin 1/16 oz) or beadhead nymphs (size 14–18) under an indicator work the deeper runs. Be careful on slick algae-coated rocks; wading staff recommended.
Lake Cunningham
153 acres Public lake (Greenville County park)
175 Lake Cunningham Rd, Greer, SC 29651; ~25 min NE of downtown Greenville off SC-101
Largemouth Bass Bluegill Channel Catfish Black Crappie Redear Sunfish

Lake Cunningham is the largest public bass-and-bream lake inside Greenville County — a quiet 153-acre electric-only impoundment off SC-101 at the Greer line. County park amenities (boat ramp, fishing pier, picnic shelter, playground) make this the go-to family destination for an after-work or weekend trip without driving to Hartwell.

Free public boat ramp, lighted fishing pier, and bank access at the county park. Daylight hours only (park gates close at sunset). SC freshwater fishing license required for anglers 16+.

Angler Tip
Topwater frog through the back coves at first light in May and June for spawning largemouth. Cane-pole bream on crickets from the pier produces stringer numbers May–July.
Lake Robinson
830 acres Public lake (Greer CPW reservoir)
1700 Groce Rd, Taylors, SC 29687; ~20 min NE of downtown Greenville
Largemouth Bass Channel Catfish Black Crappie Bluegill Striped Bass (limited)

Lake Robinson is an 830-acre Greer Commission of Public Works reservoir off Groce Road north of Taylors. The dam impounds the South Tyger River. Manageable size, public bank fishing access, and a good crappie population make this an underrated weekday lake. Greer CPW maintains the boat ramp and shoreline.

Public ramp and pier off Groce Rd. Daily access fee for non-residents. Outboard motors permitted up to size limit set by Greer CPW (verify on signage). SC freshwater fishing license required.

Angler Tip
Brush piles in the back of the major coves hold crappie February through April — drop a 1/16 oz jig or live minnow under a slip float at 6–10 feet. Channel cats hit cut bait on the lower-lake flats after dark in summer.
Lake Greenwood
11,400 acres Public lake (SCE&G/Dominion reservoir)
Greenwood/Laurens/Newberry Counties; ~50 min SE of Greenville
Striped Bass Hybrid Bass Largemouth Bass Black Crappie Catfish Bream

Lake Greenwood is the warm-water alternative to Hartwell — an 11,400-acre Dominion Energy reservoir on the Saluda River chain. Strong striper/hybrid fishery, excellent crappie in winter, and one of the better blue catfish bites in the western Piedmont. Closer to Greenville than the Lake Murray big-water scene.

Multiple public ramps, including Lake Greenwood State Park, Riverside Park, and several SCDNR landings. SC freshwater fishing license required.

Angler Tip
Find the bait, find the stripers — graph blueback herring schools on main-lake humps and saddles, then run live herring on downlines at 25–40 ft May through September. Bridge pilings hold suspended crappie December–February.

Quiet morning lake fishing inside the Conestee Nature Preserve. No gas motors, electric only, and you can hear the herons before you see them. Targeted bass with a spinnerbait along the lily pad edges. Lost one good fish in the pads but caught three keepers in the 2-3 lb range. Great solo lake when you want zero pressure.
Species: Largemouth Bass

Fishing FAQ
Common questions about fishing in the Greenville area, answered.
  • Yes. All anglers age 16 and older need a South Carolina fishing license to fish public waters in Greenville. Licenses are available at dnr.sc.gov or at local sporting goods and tackle shops. Verify current resident and non-resident fees, senior discounts, and free fishing days with SCDNR.
  • Greenville anglers fish Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, Lake Jocassee, Lake Greenwood, and closer reservoirs such as Lake Robinson and Lake Cunningham — not Spartanburg County municipal reservoirs rebranded as Greenville waters. See the water body profiles above for species and access.
  • Crappie spawn on Upstate reservoirs from late March through April. Hartwell, Greenwood, Robinson, and Cunningham all produce when fish push shallow to brush and docks.
  • Yes. Coves on Hartwell and Keowee, plus smaller lakes such as Cunningham, are popular kayak fisheries. Wear a PFD and check Corps or utility ramp rules.
  • The Reedy, Saluda, and nearby Upstate rivers hold bass, sunfish, and catfish, with Trout Unlimited / SCDNR stocking influencing some mountain tributaries seasonally. Match tactics to flow and clarity after rain.
  • SCDNR stocks selected Upstate streams and tailwaters. Check the current trout stocking report at dnr.sc.gov for waters within a drive of Greenville.
