Thornblade Club
Played Thornblade Club on a warm morning. Tom Fazio routing held up exactly like you'd expect — the greens were rolling true and the fairways read like the designer intended. If you live in Greenville, this is one of the courses you have to put on the calendar.
Memorable Hole: Hole #7 — a tight test that asked for a smart play
Toughest Green: Hole #13 — fast green that ran away from anything past the pin
Best Food: Club sandwich on the patio
Greenville Country Club Riverside
Played Greenville Country Club Riverside on a warm morning. Donald Ross / William Langford original; Brian Silva redesign routing held up exactly like you'd expect — the greens were rolling true and the fairways read like the designer intended. If you live in Greenville, this is one of the courses you have to put on the calendar.

Best Food: Cold beer and a burger after the round
Greenville Country Club Chanticleer
Played Greenville Country Club Chanticleer on a warm morning. Robert Trent Jones Sr / Roger Rulewich (Rees Jones 2001 renovation) routing held up exactly like you'd expect — the greens were rolling true and the fairways read like the designer intended. If you live in Greenville, this is one of the courses you have to put on the calendar.

Best Food: Pimento cheese sandwich at the halfway house
Greenville Country Club Chanticleer
Got on as a member's guest and finally understood the hype. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. routing through the rolling Chanticleer terrain is everything you'd expect from the man who shaped Augusta National. Walked it. The bentgrass greens were rolling pure and the fairways were spotless top to bottom.
Memorable Hole: Hole #6 -- the short par 4 over the creek
Toughest Green: Hole #9 -- false-front green that fed everything back to my feet
Best Food: Club sandwich at the halfway house
The Cliffs at Glassy
Mountaintop golf the way only the Upstate can deliver. Tom Jackson's 1993 routing sits 3,200 feet up Glassy Mountain and the views from the clubhouse alone are worth the drive. Played from the white tees in just under four hours. The little stone chapel at the summit is worth the visit by itself.
Memorable Hole: Hole #12 -- short par 3 with the elevated Blue Ridge view
Toughest Green: Hole #15 -- the tilted green that feeds left
Best Food: Burger at the clubhouse grill -- they make it the way the founding members would have remembered it
Thornblade Club
Tom Fazio routing is fantastic. Played from the tips and got humbled -- the BMW Charity Pro-Am setup is no joke. The water comes into play more than you'd think from looking at the card. Pro shop staff was outstanding -- Chase set us up with a great group of locals.
Memorable Hole: Hole #18 -- the long par 5 with the second-shot decision over the lake
Toughest Green: Hole #7 -- the long par 3 into the prevailing wind
Best Food: Wings and a cold beer at Rigsby's after the round
The Cliffs Valley
Played as a member's guest. Conditions were country-club quality top to bottom. Ben Wright's routing through the foothills gives the course more variety than most in the Upstate -- you climb, you drop, you cross creeks. Brought the whole family -- pool and tennis kept everyone busy after.
Memorable Hole: Hole #4 -- the dogleg around the pond
Toughest Green: Hole #8 -- elevated green over a swale
Best Food: Club sandwich on the patio overlooking 18
The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards
Tom Fazio old-school routing along Lake Keowee. The course rewards strategy over distance -- I outscored two guys who hit it 40 yards past me because they kept finding the bunkers I was avoiding. Greens are firm and fast. Pro shop staff was welcoming.
Memorable Hole: Hole #11 -- the double-dogleg par 5
Toughest Green: Hole #14 -- crowned green that rejects everything
Best Food: Cheeseburger and fries at the grill
The Cliffs at Keowee Falls
Jack Nicklaus routing right along Lake Keowee. The waterfront holes on the back nine are unforgettable -- felt more like a coastal course than an Upstate course. Played as guests of a member, but the public-pay rate through The Cliffs network is reasonable considering the conditions.
Memorable Hole: Hole #16 -- the par 3 with the lake behind the green
Toughest Green: Hole #13 -- the long par 4 with bunkers everywhere
Best Food: Wings and a Thomas Creek pale ale after the round
