GREENVILLE, S.C. — Clay Hendrix will coach his last four games at Furman in Greenville, S.C., this fall. The Paladins head coach said Monday that the end of the 2026 season will close out his time on the Furman sideline, a career at the school that stretches back to his playing days in the early 1980s.

Hendrix first told athletics chief Jason Donnelly and then his players before going public. Furman has not named a replacement.

Now in his 10th year as head coach, Hendrix has gone 62-49, with a 46-28 record in Southern Conference games. His teams won league titles in 2018 and 2023 and reached the FCS playoffs four times. He was named the top coach in the league in 2017 and again in 2023.

Before running the program he coached the offensive line in Greenville for 19 seasons, from 1988 to 2006, and was on the staff for the 1988 national title team. In between, he spent about a decade as an assistant at Air Force.

Hendrix, a Commerce, Ga., native, started three years at guard for the Paladins as a player. Counting his playing, assistant and head coaching years, he has been part of 11 of the 15 conference championships Furman has won.

This season has been a struggle, with the team at 2-6 overall and 1-3 against conference foes. Four games remain: Western Carolina visits Paladin Stadium on Saturday, a trip to The Citadel follows on Nov. 7, Chattanooga comes to town Nov. 14, and the finale is at VMI on Nov. 21.
