GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman women’s soccer fell behind early and then scored twice after halftime to beat Western Carolina 2-1 on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, a result that gave the Paladins a share of the Southern Conference regular-season crown.
Western Carolina went ahead in the ninth minute on a header off a corner kick, and the Catamounts carried that lead into the break. Furman controlled the second half, outshooting the visitors 18-5 after intermission.
Maddie Massie pulled the Paladins even in the 59th minute with her fourth goal of the year. Ellie Herrmann won it in the 84th minute when her free kick beat the Western Carolina keeper.
Furman closed the regular season 13-3-3 and 8-0-2 in league play, matching Samford for the title. The Paladins had gone seven years without a regular-season league championship. Samford holds the top seed for the league tournament and Furman is No. 2.
The Paladins open tournament play Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. ET against the winner of Friday’s Mercer-Wofford match in Greenville. Whoever wins the tournament goes on to the NCAA tournament as the conference qualifier.
