GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman got the ball inside the Samford 20 with a chance to tie in the closing minutes Saturday, but the Bulldogs knocked away two throws at the goal line and left Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C., with a 13-6 Southern Conference win.
The teams were even at 6 deep into the fourth quarter when Samford recovered a Ben Croasdale fumble at the Furman 11. Three plays later, facing third-and-13, Gabarri Johnson found Cayden Aukerman for a 14-yard score with 6:42 left.
Furman got one last shot from the Samford 41 with 2:25 remaining. Freshman Trey Smith, in off the bench, moved the Paladins to the 19, but on third and fourth down his passes toward the end zone were broken up, and Samford took over with 1:28 to go.
Connor Ackerley threw for 216 yards for Furman but was picked off twice, and the Paladins managed just 77 rushing yards while losing three turnovers. Raleigh Herbert made 16 tackles and Eli Lipscomb had two sacks.
Both teams are now 2-6. Furman, 1-3 in league play, hosts Western Carolina at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
