Storm-Ready Home: SC Safe Home Grant Program

SC STATEWIDE PROGRAM

The SC Safe Home program is a statewide initiative administered by the South Carolina Department of Insurance (DOI.SC.GOV). It provides grants to help South Carolina homeowners harden their homes against wind and storm damage — available statewide in SC including Greenville County.

What the program covers

  • Roof deck attachment (re-nailing sheathing)
  • Secondary water barrier (ice-and-water shield)
  • Roof-to-wall connections (hurricane straps)
  • Opening protection (shutters, impact-resistant windows)
  • Garage door bracing

Eligibility in Greenville County — SC Safe Home is available statewide. Greenville County homeowners in single-family residences are eligible. Priority is given to low-to-moderate income applicants and residents in wind-exposed areas.

Grant amounts — Grants typically cover 25–75% of eligible improvement costs, up to program caps. Amounts vary by project type and funding cycle. Check DOI.SC.GOV for the current cycle’s maximums.

How to apply

  1. Visit doi.sc.gov/safehome for the current application window
  2. Get a contractor estimate from a licensed SC contractor
  3. Submit application with supporting documentation
  4. Wait for approval before starting work (work done before approval is not reimbursable)

Greenville note — Greenville County occasionally supplements state programs with local grant matching through the Greenville County Planning and Development department. Check with the county directly for any local supplements.
