Scene for Prisma Health's deal for 36 South Carolina urgent-care clinics is set to close N

GREENVILLE, South Carolina — Prisma Health, the hospital system based in Greenville, South Carolina, is taking on 36 urgent-care sites Novant Health operates in this state. Both a Sept. 25 report and a follow-up published Sunday morning put the closing on Nov. 1.

The count is the same in each account: 36 clinics, spread across South Carolina, moving from Novant to Prisma. About 500 people who work in those buildings are part of the handoff. Sunday's report calls them employees Prisma is inheriting. The September report calls them medical staff affected by the transition. Neither page publishes a sale price.

Where the doors will be after Nov. 1 is mostly unchanged, with a caveat both accounts share. Prisma expects most of the clinics to keep their present addresses. A smaller group may not. The September report says some may move. Sunday's report says clinics that sit very near another Prisma site could be combined, and that workers caught in that kind of consolidation are supposed to be offered jobs at a neighboring location. Sunday's report also says no termination notices had gone out.

Sunday's account is the one that uses the name the buildings are to carry, Prisma Health Urgent Care, and the one that says the purchase more than doubles the urgent-care count Prisma already has, from 31 sites. It also says physical-therapy operations tied to some of the clinics are not in the deal, and it describes a Spartanburg location among the buildings in the photographs attached to the story. The September report does not repeat those three points. It does say the clinics had been Doctor's Care sites, a former name Sunday's article does not use. It also says Prisma is the largest health system in the state and that it serves more than 1.6 million people in South Carolina and Tennessee. Those two figures are not in the Sunday piece, so they stay out of the shared core of this account.

What the Sunday piece adds, and the earlier report does not, is Novant's stated direction: the seller is pulling back from walk-in clinics and putting more weight on virtual visits, including a plan for round-the-clock virtual access. Prisma, in that later telling, is doing the opposite, adding buildings because more people are uninsured or have no regular doctor. Those explanations belong to one article. The transaction itself does not.

For Greenville, South Carolina, the practical stake is the system headquartered here absorbing a statewide urgent-care network, staff included, on the first of November, with most sites staying put and a few possibly folding into a neighbor.
